Signs your heating needs repair
- The thermostat calls for heat, but the air from the vents stays cool.
- The heater turns on and shuts off again after only a short run.
- A burning or electrical smell keeps coming back after the first few uses of the season.
- On a heat pump, the outdoor unit is covered in ice that does not clear.
- Banging, squealing or rumbling sounds when the heat comes on.
- Some rooms warm up while others stay cold.
What to expect
Heating calls usually start at the thermostat and the filter, because a wrong setting or a clogged filter is behind many no-heat problems.
On a gas furnace, the technician typically looks at the igniter, the flame sensor, the burners and the safety switches.
On a heat pump, the reversing valve, the defrost controls and the outdoor unit get checked, since the same equipment both heats and cools.
A dusty smell the first time the heat runs each fall is normal; a strong burning smell that does not fade is a reason to switch the system off.
Homes with gas appliances should have working carbon monoxide detectors, and the start of heating season is a good time to test them.
Once the cause is clear, you should get an explanation of the repair before the work starts.

Heating questions
Why does my heat pump blow cooler air than a furnace?
Air from a heat pump often feels less hot than air from a gas furnace, even when it is working normally. If the house is not warming at all, or the outdoor unit stays iced over, it is worth having it checked.
